They may buy bank products, bonds, stocks, mutual funds, best performing funds and make retirement savings where the money may remain tied up with it for a substantial period of time. Most such investments have different pros and cons. One can gain knowledge about the individual category, its performance in each financial year and study the predictions made by leading financial rating institutions about various types of individual asset class to make a decision in the alternatives categories.

There are a number of traditional categories like precious metals , fine art /collectables, gemstones and real estate offering long term gains, and there are some new categories like spread betting and cryptocurrency, that can get early gains.  Alternative assets guard against inflation, are not affected by the change in interest rate and are passion driven. The value of such investment is entirely dependent on supply and demand. Options like forex are highly liquid  but complex for an average investor. On the other hand, options like crude can provide an effective way to balance the portfolio and provide long-term growth.
