Commodities are basic goods used within trade that are substitutable with other commodities of the same sort. They are most often used to add to the production of other goods or services. The quality of each commodity may differ but is essentially the same across producers. When they are traded on an exchange, commodities then must also meet the stated minimum standards, also known as a basic grade.
