Why are engagement rings special?

An engagement ring is a symbol that you are engaged to be married. Mostly worn by women, engagement rings can have diamonds or many other gemstones in them. Different cultures vary slightly. For example, some may wear matching engagement and wedding rings. 

In some cultures, the engagement ring is in fact the wedding ring also. Engagement rings are a sign of accepting a marriage proposal. It is common for the promise ring, engagement ring or wedding ring to be worn on the left hand; the ring finger.
